We are very proud to have brought the very first Doors Open event to Plean.
The event came about as a result of the historical research the team uncovered as part of the project to rebuild and restore the house and stables. And the information we uncovered was just too good to keep to ourselves!
So we decided on six guided historical walks over two days and the events were fully booked well in advance of the events.
We had a stunning September day on Saturday with glorious sunshine – a stark contrast to Sunday which was rather soggy! But despite the awful weather – people still turned up for their tours. You are a hardy bunch and we sincerely think you for donning the waterproofs to make the most of the soggy Sunday!
Our tours covered the history of the house, Francis Simpson who built it, those who lived in it after he died including Wallace Thorneycroft, industrial Plean including the railways and the coal mine, the 1922 pit disaster and stories of the gamekeeper. We also talked of our vision and aims to bring the house and stables back to their former glory.
Everyone who took part in our tours discovered things about the history of the people who used to live in the park when it was an estate – as well as the industrial history of the area. It is hard to imagine how industrial it was considering it is now a semi-rural area. We were also pleased to have people on our tours who remembered things about the park and they could talk to how they remembered it. We will be looking to capture their memories which will help with our project and telling the stories of the people of the park.
A lot of work went on behind the scenes in addition to the historical research – our brilliant bakers never fail and delivered some tasty treats including our branded cupcakes.
Thank you to everyone who made the weekend happen – the Doors Open team at Stirling Council, our volunteers, our bakers and to those who came on our tours. We loved it all – even if we were beyond soggy on Sunday by the end of it all!
We look forward to next year!
See you again soon
Jackie – and everyone at Plean House and Stables
PS – If you fancy some more of our brilliant bakes – we will be in Plean Country Park, Saturday 3 October, 8.30am-11am as part of our monthly fundraising stall.
